With nearly 10 percent of the nation's workforce unemployed, Americans are looking for ways to save money. So, a warning that the nation's East Coast and parts of the south could experience one of the coldest winters this decade couldn't come at a worse time. Consumers will likely turn to alternative heating sources again this winter to heat their homes. The number of wood pellet stoves sold in the U.S. increased by 80 percent from 2008 to 2009. Renewed interest in wood pellet stoves, space heaters, fireplaces and other devices can be expected as temperatures drop. The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) offers guidelines for the safe installation and operation of alternative heating devices.
